Officers in the southern Netherlands discovered a garden gnome weighing nearly 2kg (4lb) made entirely of the drug MDMA, also known as ecstasy.

The unusual find was part of a larger drug bust, and Dongemond Police, in a social media post, noted that while drugs come in various shapes and sizes, “every now and then we come across special things.”

The gnome, which appeared to have its hands covering its mouth, was found among other suspected narcotics. The police remarked on the “strange place” where someone had chosen to store a garden gnome and decided to test it for drugs. The gnome’s surprised expression, described by police as “visibly startled,” added a peculiar twist to the discovery.

MDMA is a synthetic, illegal party drug, and as of 2019, the Netherlands was among the top producers of it worldwide.
