French Prime Minister François Bayrou has given Algeria a few weeks to accept the return of its citizens facing deportation from France, threatening to cancel the 1968 agreement.

This agreement grants Algerians special privileges regarding visas, residence permits, family reunification, and certain professions.

These comments come amid rising tensions between the two countries over immigration, especially after 86 French senators called for the agreement’s cancellation in November 2024, arguing that it provides unjust preferential treatment to Algerians compared to other nations.

Senior French officials assert that continuing this agreement conflicts with France’s new immigration policies. In response, Algeria rejected France’s pressure, warning that such actions could harm bilateral relations.

Algeria insists that any amendments to the agreement should come through dialogue, not unilateral decisions, which could further strain the relationship with France.
