The technology could help in achieving national goals, according to the president

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are reshaping everyday life and are expected to become an essential source for achieving Russia’s national goals, President Vladimir Putin has said.

The Russian leader made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing an international AI conference in Moscow. According to Putin, the new technology is increasingly making its way into all sectors of the country’s economy and social sphere and has significantly transformed entire industries.

“Artificial intelligence technologies are intended to become the most important resource for achieving national development goals,” Putin said, adding the tech could help in strengthening the country’s defense capability, high-quality development of the economy and social sectors, public administration, and the growth of innovation.

“In order to successfully solve these problems, Russia must become a world leader not only in the creation, but also in the scale of application and the use of AI in all spheres of our lives without exception,” the president stressed.

One of the “key conditions” for the country’s scientific, technological and ideological sovereignty is to have its own developments in the AI sphere, according to Putin.

Algorithms and principles of AI operation are laid down by people, who imply certain values, culture, traditions, national interests, and so on, he said. “In order to determine the future, the fate of Russia, we must create such technologies ourselves, independently.”

Russian companies are keeping pace with the latest technological solutions, actively integrating these innovations and achievements into their work, Putin said. They will continue creating products and services based on AI technologies not only for Russia but “for the entire world.”

Russia will keep working in the field of AI tech with countries willing to cooperate, Putin said, explaining that Russia should participate on par with other nations in the global race to develop new technologies.

In this regard, he proposed holding a strategic session in Russia on the future of AI in order “to think together in what direction such powerful technologies will develop further.”

The Russian president also assessed the work of AI tools that will be used for his Q&A this month, saying the way they are processing the numerous questions for the upcoming event “exceeds all expectations.”

Last week, the Kremlin announced it would use a GigaChat tool, developed by Russian banking and tech giant Sber, to sort through questions submitted by the Russian population to the president.

This year, the marathon press conference will be held on December 19.
