French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot’s visit to Algiers on Sunday marked the first diplomatic move between France and Algeria in over eight months of stagnation. During a two-and-a-half-hour meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, both parties expressed a mutual desire to move past recent tensions and enter a new phase of balanced cooperation.
France imposed clear conditions for this renewed partnership, emphasizing non-interference in internal matters and rejecting any linkage between bilateral relations and regional conflicts, particularly regarding Morocco.
Algeria, under growing diplomatic isolation and pressures over energy and migration issues, found itself compelled to ease tensions and engage with France. France’s stance on the Sahara, supporting Morocco’s sovereignty, remains a major point of contention, further reflecting Algeria’s diminished influence on France’s strategic decisions.
