The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned ambassadors from various European countries to seek clarification regarding their countries’ reactions to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling on the agricultural and fisheries agreements between the EU and Morocco, according to TSA Algeria.

Citing a well-informed source to the Algerian Press Service (APS), TSA Algeria reported that the names of the European countries summoned were not disclosed.

The Algerian press agency underscored that most of the summoned ambassadors affirmed that the statements in question “do not represent a rejection of the Court’s rulings or any intention to disregard them in the future.”

The same source added that “some of these ambassadors were surprised by the content of the statement released by the European Commission, which prioritized contractors’ rights over the rulings issued by the EU’s highest court.”

However, APS did not reveal which countries’ representatives in Algeria voiced this criticism of the European executive.

For context, 19 countries have expressed support for Morocco’s partnership with the EU, as revealed by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita during a press conference on October 8, emphasizing that “the court’s decision is separate from the European Commission’s statement and the announcements from these countries. “

However, Algeria has sharply criticized the European Union’s endorsement of its strategic partnership with Morocco. In a statement, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf “expressed astonishment at the EU’s prioritization of trade agreements over fundamental principles of international law.”

The minister accused the EU of prioritizing its strategic ties with Morocco while “seemingly ignoring the rights of the Sahrawi people to exploit their resources.”
