Prosecutors in the Algerian city of Dar El Beida announced Saturday the opening of a criminal investigation into a guest who appeared on Sky News Arabia, after a video clip circulated online allegedly containing statements that “undermine national symbols and unity.”

In a statement, the public prosecutor’s office identified the suspect as Mohamed El Amine Belghith, who appeared in what was described as a “dramatic journalistic project.” The video reportedly included remarks that authorities deemed a “clear attack on national symbols and constants,” as well as a distortion of Algerian national identity and a violation of the constitution.

The prosecution said the footage “contained hate speech that threatens national peace and undermines the values of the Algerian nation,” prompting them to launch an urgent investigation and order Belghith’s arrest.

He was brought before the public prosecutor, interrogated, and referred to an investigating judge, who ordered his pretrial detention pending further legal proceedings.

Authorities argue the case constitutes a serious breach of the founding principles of Algerian society and a direct threat to national unity and state stability.

However, according to local observers, the controversy stems from Belghith’s opinions on the Amazigh issue, raising concerns about freedom of expression in the country.
