In a groundbreaking medical achievement, an Australian man in his 40s became the first person in the world to be discharged from a hospital while fitted with a fully functional artificial heart.

The patient, who had been suffering from severe heart failure, spent 105 days living with the BiVacor Total Artificial Heart, a state-of-the-art device that uses magnetic levitation technology.

The device, a titanium blood pump designed to act as a temporary solution for patients awaiting heart transplants, was implanted during a six-hour surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney on November 22 as a temporary solution while the patient awaited a transplant.

Months after his discharge, the patient returned to St Vincent’s Hospital in March for a successful heart transplant, which was made possible by the stabilization provided by the artificial heart.
