The death toll from the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) passenger plane near the western Kazakh city of Aktau has risen to 38, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev announced on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the Azerbaijan Prosecutor General’s Office reported 32 survivors.
The Embraer 190, operating on the Baku-Grozny route and carrying 67 passengers and five crew, made an emergency landing three kilometers from the town of Aktau.
The crashed plane was carrying 42 Azerbaijan nationals, 16 Russians , six Kazakhs and three from Kyrgyzs, Kairat Zhanaspayev, head of the emergency rescue services department at Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations stated, quoted by the media.
The airline AZAL has revealed the passenger and crew lists of the crashed aircraft.
A criminal investigation into the crash has been opened by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan.
For his part, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev dispatched a high-level delegation to investigate the crash. A Kazakh government commission has also been set up to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the crash and to provide the necessary assistance.
