The Liberals have won enough seats in the federal election held Monday in Canada to form a minority government, according to local media.
Led by Mark Carney, the Liberals will form their fourth consecutive government.
In his victory speech, Carney said he was “looking forward to delivering for Canadians.” He also reiterated his pledge to make the Canadian economy less dependent on the U.S. and to reduce barriers to interprovincial trade.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre congratulated Carney, and said his party would hold the next Parliament to account.
Although the New Democratic Party and the Bloc Québécois saw significant losses, either party could hold the balance of power in the next parliament.
The elections took place in the shadow of a trade war with the United States, Canada’s largest trading partner.
More than 28.9 million Canadians were eligible to cast their ballots in this country of about 41.5 million.
