Chinese government officials are now calling women to encourage them to have children, a stark contrast to decades of strict birth control policies.
According to the South China Morning Post, local government workers are contacting women, asking if they are pregnant and urging them to have children.
One woman, 35-year-old Jane Huang, shared her experience of receiving such a call. The officer, seemingly unaware of the modern values of privacy and choice, tried to extract information about her pregnancy status.
This new initiative comes amid concerns over China’s rapidly decreasing population. While the previous focus was on controlling population growth, the government is now encouraging families to have more children to address the demographic shift.
