Ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration as US President on January 20, the CIA released a detailed map of Morocco, including the Saharan provinces.
Accompanying the map, the agency reaffirmed that in 2020, the United States recognized the Sahara as part of Morocco.
This recognition was maintained by President Joe Biden, despite strong opposition from the left wing of the Democratic Party and some Republican lawmakers linked to Algeria.
With Trump’s return, Morocco hopes the US will move forward with plans to establish a consulate in Dakhla, a promise made in December 2020 when Trump acknowledged Morocco’s sovereignty over the region.
