Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” was playing when Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas was struck by an unexpected wind gust on Nov. 7, 2024, near Tenerife, causing the ship to tilt 45 degrees.
Passengers described chaos as furniture and food slid across the deck, with many screaming in panic. One passenger, fearing for his life, texted friends saying he didn’t expect to survive.
The tilt lasted about three minutes, causing minor damage and prompting a medical stop in Las Palmas. Passengers were asked to return to their rooms while crew members conducted accountability checks.
After delays in Spain, the ship docked in Miami on Nov. 17. The Explorer of the Seas, a 1,020-foot ship with a capacity of over 4,000 passengers, features amenities like an ice rink and mini golf.
