Spanish lawyer, businesswoman, and director at the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), María Tato, announced on Tuesday that she is pursuing legal action against the online publication El Español and other digital media outlets for publishing reports linking her alleged business ventures in Morocco to Spain’s bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on the regional radio station Onda Vasca, Tato refuted the claims, emphasizing her dedication to the World Cup bid over the past two years. She stated that her efforts have been conducted with the utmost discretion and clarified that “none of her business ventures have engaged in commercial activities in Morocco during this time.”
The Spanish lawyer categorically denied abusing her position, questioning the motives behind the allegations.
“I fail to understand why this harm is being done,” she said adding, “it’s a complete discredit to me and to such a significant project as the World Cup, which I have worked on, continue to work on, and hope to keep contributing to as I have until now.”
Tato concluded, “enough of staying silent and putting up with falsehoods. I’ve taken legal measures. Enough of biased, manipulated information with other motives.”
For context, Spanish news outlet El Español accused Tato, a member of the 2030 World Cup Executive Committee, of reportedly using her trips to Morocco to hold business meetings in Morocco.
It further mentioned that Tato was appointed by the Moroccan government in 2022 as Spain’s representative for investments in the Sahara.
El Español noted that “Tato has maintained close ties with the Moroccan government for years. This relationship has raised significant concerns within certain sectors of Spanish football and politics, particularly in light of the competition between Spain and Morocco over the number of venues and the stadium that will host the 2030 World Cup final.”
