Spanish news outlet El Mundo reported that diplomatic relations between Morocco and the U.S. under President Trump quickly sparked attention after a phone call between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Despite Trump having been in office for a week, no communication occurred between U.S. officials and Spain, while contacts were made with Morocco and several European countries. The Spanish newspaper noted this exclusion, suggesting it highlighted a lack of coherence in U.S. foreign policy priorities.
The report further argued that the Trump administration was unlikely to prioritize Spain, pointing to ongoing concerns over Madrid’s defense spending. In contrast, Morocco seemed to hold more strategic importance for the U.S., with Rubio engaging with foreign ministers from countries like the Baltic States, Hungary, Italy, and Germany, alongside Morocco, within the first days of Trump’s presidency.
