The European Union on Wednesday said Google’s search engine and its Google Play app store violated the bloc’s digital competition rules, which could lead to fines of billions of euros.

The EU told Google parent Alphabet of its “preliminary view” that it breached the law by favouring its own services — such as shopping — in Google Search results, and prevented app developers from steering customers to other channels for cheaper offers.
