Spain’s far-right party Vox reignited controversy over a Moroccan culture and Arabic language program taught to a small number of students with dual nationality in Murcia. Vox, backed by the Popular Party (PP), claimed the program celebrates Morocco’s Green March and undermines Spanish values.
The program, part of a bilateral treaty between Spain and Morocco, is voluntary, offered only upon parental request and school approval. Just 300 out of 320,000 students in the region are enrolled. Regional President Fernando López Miras clarified that the Murcia government neither funds nor manages the program, as it falls under Spain’s national Ministry of Education.
Despite this, Vox threatened to block the 2025 regional budget unless the program is removed, and even proposed revoking dual nationality for those who “disrespect Spanish customs.” López Miras dismissed the claims, noting similar agreements exist with France, Germany, and Ukraine, and urged Vox to stop spreading misinformation.
