A French Euro-deputy called for the return of the Statue of Liberty, stating that the United States no longer represents the values that led France to gift it. Raphael Glucksmann, a centre-left politician, made the comments during a convention for his Place Publique movement on Sunday.
“Give us back the Statue of Liberty,” Glucksmann said, addressing Americans who, in his view, had sided with tyrants and fired researchers advocating for scientific freedom. He added, “We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently, you despise it. So, it will be just fine here at home.”
The Statue of Liberty, designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, was unveiled in New York in 1886 as a symbol of the friendship between France and the U.S.
Glucksmann, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump’s policies, also attacked Trump’s cuts to research funding, which had led the French government to offer opportunities to displaced American researchers.
Glucksmann also criticized far-right leaders in France for their support of Trump and Elon Musk.
