German voters head to the polls on Sunday with the conservatives as the strong favourites after an intense campaign underscored by a far-right surge, bolstered by Donald Trump’s presidency in the U.S., and amid voter concerns about economic stagnation, immigration, and European security.

‘The question is whether the CDU will perform, if it will get enough votes to secure a strong mandate, and if it will be able to form a coalition with just one other party—an issue being widely debated in Germany regarding stability,’ says Yann Wernert, Senior Policy Fellow at the Jacques Delors Centre, who joined us from Berlin.
