In a highly symbolic ceremony at the United Nations, marked by the raising of Syria’s new flag, the UN Special Envoy to Damascus praised the country’s political transition, describing it as having reached “a truly critical turning point.”
Amid cheers and applause, the Syrian flag bearing three stars—the emblem of the revolution—was hoisted for the first time on Friday morning in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York, joining the flags of the other 192 member states. This powerful image marks Syria’s post-Assad entry onto the international diplomatic stage.
Asaad al-Shaibani, the Foreign Minister of Syria’s transitional government, personally raised the national banner, becoming the first senior Syrian official to visit the UN since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8.
This historic moment preceded a United Nations Security Council meeting dedicated to Syria’s transition, with Al-Shaibani in attendance.
Call for Sanctions to Be Lifted
“Syria is finally breathing again and opening its doors to the world,” declared Al-Shaibani during the session.
He urged Council members to lift sanctions against Syria, arguing that they hinder the flow of aid and investment, ultimately benefiting terrorism rather than the Syrian people.
Al-Shaibani also called on the Council to demand that Israel comply with the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which established a demilitarized buffer zone on the Golan Heights—territory partially occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War.
Since December 8, Israel has reportedly stepped up military incursions into the demilitarized zone and conducted airstrikes across Syria, including in the capital, Damascus.
Israeli authorities, for their part, assert that these operations are solely aimed at destroying military targets perceived as threats to their national security.
