Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi accused Spain of “occasionally shooting at migrants attempting to cross the border from Morocco,” in response to criticisms directed at Italy’s immigration policies by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, according to Spanish media reports.

Piantedosi stated that these criticisms are “unique,” pointing out that Spain itself enforces strict policies to curb illegal immigration. He urged Spain to “maintain balance in certain considerations” regarding its immigration policies.

In turn, Sánchez rejected the proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to establish centers for the deportation of migrants outside the European Union, a suggestion supported by Piantedosi and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Sánchez argued that this proposal would not solve the immigration problem but would create new issues.

Sánchez emphasized the importance of managing immigration in an organized and responsible manner, asserting that immigration can be a driver of economic growth and can help address the demographic challenges facing Europe.

These exchanges come amid increasing pressure on European countries to tackle the challenge of illegal immigration, as the continent sees a rising number of migrants attempting to reach its shores in search of a better life
