Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has declared a three-day period of official mourning following the passing of Pope Francis, beginning immediately and continuing through Wednesday.
In an official statement, Cabinet Secretary-General Judge Mahmoud Makieh announced that national flags would be flown at half-mast across all government buildings, institutions, and municipalities.
Additionally, radio and television programming will be adjusted to reflect the somber occasion. The same measures will be observed on the day of the pontiff’s funeral and memorial services.
Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri paid tribute to Pope Francis in a heartfelt statement, saying: “At a time when humanity is in desperate need of a unifying voice, we lose a figure who spoke only the truth.”
He added: “We lose a man of faith, a humble monk who renounced titles and elevated the heavenly message in a Christ-like manner — one that refuses to equate love for God with hatred of man.”
Berri extended his condolences on behalf of the Lebanese Parliament to all Lebanese people, particularly members of the Catholic Church in Lebanon and around the world, as well as to the College of Cardinals at the Vatican.
Pope Francis, widely admired for his commitment to social justice, interfaith dialogue, and humility, leaves behind a legacy that resonated far beyond the Catholic Church. His passing marks the end of an era for global spiritual leadership.
