A man previously convicted for residing in Syria and Iraq between 2014 and 2015 has been charged with preparing a terrorist attack in 2024 and was remanded in custody on Friday evening, multiple sources told AFP on Saturday.
According to the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT), the suspect, born in 1993, has been charged with preparing a terrorist act as a lone actor and publicly glorifying terrorism online, confirming details first reported by Le Parisien. Following a hearing before a judge, he was formally placed in pretrial detention.
A source familiar with the case revealed that the suspect had already been imprisoned in October 2024 for glorifying terrorism. Investigators suspect that, between late 2023 and late 2024, he had researched drone usage, attempted to acquire explosive materials, and scouted potential targets—though no direct link between these activities has been firmly established.
The man’s prior conviction stems from his stay in Iraq and Syria from 2014 to 2015, for which he had previously been sentenced.
When contacted by AFP, the suspect’s lawyer, Maxence Gallo, declined to comment.
