A massive drug disposal operation in Lice, Turkey, sparked outrage after 20 tons of confiscated cannabis were burned near residential areas on April 18, exposing the town’s 25,000 residents to thick clouds of smoke, Turkish media reported.
Locals reported dizziness, nausea, hallucinations, and other symptoms lasting for days. “We’ve kept our windows shut, but our children are sick, and we keep going to the hospital,” one resident said.
The cannabis, valued at $260 million, was destroyed using 200 liters of diesel fuel.
Critics slammed the method as unprofessional, with Yahya Oger of the Green Star Association calling it “unacceptable” and urging disposal in controlled facilities.
Adding to residents’ anger, authorities arranged the drug bundles to spell out “Lice” before igniting them.
The cannabis was seized in 226 anti-drug operations that led to 1,941 arrests.
