McDonald’s stock took a significant hit Wednesday morning after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced an E. coli outbreak linked to the fast-food chain’s Quarter Pounder burgers, CNBS reported.

McDonald’s shares experienced a decline of approximately 7% in pre-market trading. In response to the outbreak, the company issued a statement detailing its swift actions to address the situation.

The outbreak has resulted in 10 hospitalizations and one fatality.

49 cases have been reported across 10 states, with a concentration in Colorado and Nebraska. The majority of those affected reported consuming a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder. One patient developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe condition that can lead to kidney failure. An elderly individual in Colorado lost their life due to complications from the illness.

Initial investigations suggest that the E. coli outbreak may be connected to slivered onions used in the Quarter Pounder. The onions, sourced from a single supplier, were distributed to three distribution centers.
