The World Monuments Fund (WMF) has added the moon to its list of 25 threatened heritage sites, citing risks from upcoming commercial and government-funded lunar missions.

Concerns include potential damage to historic artifacts, like Neil Armstrong’s footprints, as private trips are expected to increase after NASA’s Artemis III mission in 2027.

WMF President Bénédicte de Montlaur emphasized the need for preservation protocols amid “mounting risks” from accelerating lunar activities.

The list, typically focused on Earth’s cultural landmarks, also features the Andean Qhapaq Ñan road, Turkey’s Antakya, and Japan’s Noto peninsula, both impacted by earthquakes.
