Khalid Ahriouil, an 11-year-old boy, is being celebrated as a hero after rescuing a four-year-old girl from a river in Bodegraven, Netherlands.
The incident occurred on March 11th while Khalid was cycling to the mosque to meet his father. He had just left home to pick up some items for his father when he heard cries coming from the water.
“I saw something that looked like hair coming out of the water,” Khalid told local media. Without hesitation, he jumped over a ditch and into the river, where he found a young girl drowning. Moments later, passersby also rushed to help the two children out of the ditch bordering the river. Emergency services arrived on the scene and the four-year-old girl was transported to the hospital after receiving initial treatment.
Khalid, who is originally from Morocco and arrived in Bodegraven with his parents just four months ago, was greeted as a hero by the city’s mayor, Michiel Grauss. “It’s not easy to act in an emergency situation, but that’s exactly what Khalid did, and it takes courage. We are extremely proud of his courageous performance. On behalf of the municipality of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, we want to thank you for your heroism,” the mayor said to the young boy.
