A Moroccan man suspected of murdering a 19-year-old university student and leaving her body in a forest in western Paris has been arrested in Switzerland, officials said.

A source close to the case, speaking to AFP, identified the alleged attacker as a 22-year-old man of Moroccan nationality, while prosecutors said the suspect had been previously convicted of rape and had been under order to leave France.

On Saturday, the lifeless body of a student was discovered in the Bois de Boulogne forest in western Paris, not far from the Universite Paris-Dauphine she attended.

On Tuesday, a man suspected of committing the crime was arrested in Switzerland, French officials said.

The Paris public prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday the suspect had been “identified and arrested today in the canton of Geneva”.

“An extradition request will be sent to the Swiss authorities,” the prosecutor’s office told AFP.

According to the prosecutors, in 2021 the man was convicted of rape committed in 2019 when he was a minor.

He was released in June 2024 after serving out his sentence. He resided in France illegally.

Authorities only released the first name of the victim, Philippine.

The student had last been seen at the university on Friday.

According to a police source, witnesses had reported seeing a man with a pickaxe.

The killing of the student is expected to further inflame political tensions in France.

France’s new interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, has vowed to boost law and order, tighten immigration legislation and make it easier to deport foreigners convicted of crimes.
