The second ministerial meeting of the anti-corruption law enforcement agencies of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) kicked off in Doha on Tuesday, with Morocco’s participation.
The Kingdom is represented at this gathering by a delegation led by Director of Criminal Affairs, Pardons and Crime Detection at the Ministry of Justice Hicham Mellati, and includes Vice-President of the National Authority for Integrity, Prevention and the Fight against Corruption Abdelkhaleq Chmachi, in addition to officials from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
On this occasion, participants discussed several decisions to be submitted to the ministerial meeting on Wednesday, including the formation of an open-ended government expert team to examine mechanisms and methods of implementing the Makkah Convention for OIC member states, specifically in the area of anti-corruption law enforcement, as well as determining a mechanism for periodic review of the convention’s enforcement.
At the start of the meeting, participants appointed members of the Bureau in charge of monitoring the implementation of the decisions issued by the meetings of the anti-corruption law enforcement agencies of the OIC member states, chaired by Qatar. Azerbaijan holds the post of Vice-President for the Asian group, and Senegal is Vice-President for the African group, while Palestine has been appointed Vice-President and Saudi Arabia as Rapporteur.
In her address, Director of the Control and Development Department of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority in Qatar Amal Ahmed Al-Kuwari said that this meeting was a crucial step towards building on the efforts made to bring the Makkah convention into force, considering it a major contribution at regional and international level to the combat against corruption.
For his part, Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs at the OIC, Ambassador Yousef Al-Dubaie recalled that the initiative launched in 2022 by the Organization’s member states was aimed at strengthening cooperation in the field of anti-corruption law enforcement, describing it as “unique and remarkable” on an international and regional scale.
This biannual ministerial meeting aims at strengthening cooperation between relevant departments in the field of law enforcement against offences covered by the Makkah Convention, in order to bolster prevention and to facilitate investigation and prosecution of corruption offences.
