At least 1,644 people have lost their lives in Myanmar following the 7.7 magnitude earthquake and the 6.4 aftershock that struck the country’s central region on Friday, according to the latest figures provided by local authorities.
The earthquake has left 1,644 dead and 3,408 injured, primarily in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, authorities reported. They have issued an appeal to the international community for assistance.
It has also claimed six lives in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, including three people who were killed when a 30-story government building under construction collapsed.
The United Nations has allocated $5 million from its emergency fund for relief efforts in Myanmar as the organization works to assess the number of affected people and the scale of humanitarian needs.
Several countries have also offered assistance.
