A New York woman has been indicted on hate crime charges after allegedly pepper-spraying a Muslim Uber driver while he was praying. Jennifer Guilbeault, 23, was captured on surveillance video attacking driver Shohel Mahmud in August on the Upper East Side, shortly after he began reciting an Arabic prayer.

An unnamed fellow passenger attempted to intervene during the assault, as Mahmud promptly called 911, leading to Guilbeault’s arrest.

The Manhattan District Attorney has officially charged her with one count each of Assault in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, Assault in the Third Degree as a Hate Crime, and Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree. District Attorney Alvin Bragg emphasized that the attack was senseless and highlighted the need for a safe environment for all New Yorkers, stating that the Hate Crimes Unit will continue to address such bias-motivated incidents.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) expressed support for the charges, commending law enforcement for sending a strong message against bias-motivated attacks. Guilbeault’s former employer, D Pagan Communications, stated on X that they do not condone her actions.
