Newly elected Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, watched the 2024 film Conclave just before entering the real-life Vatican conclave that would elevate him to the papacy.
His brother, John Prevost, revealed the detail in an interview with NBC’s Chicago affiliate WMAQ-TV.
The film, a drama-thriller directed by Edward Berger and based on Robert Harris’s 2016 novel, imagines the behind-the-scenes maneuvering within the Vatican as cardinals choose a successor to a beloved pontiff.
“I said: ‘Are you ready for this? Did you watch the movie Conclave, so you know how to behave?’ And he had just finished watching it,” John joked, “So he knew how to behave.”
Prevost, the first American pope, entered the conclave as a lesser-known figure.
His election stunned many Vatican observers, echoing the movie’s plot, which centers on an outsider candidate rising amid political intrigue and inner-church rivalries.
While the film takes creative liberties, Vatican experts have said it captures many procedural details accurately.
