Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has described the initiative as a return to “common sense”
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced plans to amend the country’s constitution to officially recognize only two genders – male and female. Speaking on the STVR program ‘Saturday Dialogues’, Fico described the initiative as a return to “common sense.”
“I came up with the initiative to include a provision in the constitution stating that Slovakia defines only two genders – male and female,” Fico said during the broadcast, adding that Slovakia “simply cannot have anyone else who thinks they are a helicopter, a cat, or a dog.”
The prime minister proposed a constitutional amendment to codify the recognition of two genders, linking it to existing provisions such as the definition of marriage. He argued that the amendment is crucial for Slovakia to protect its sovereign ethical and moral values, especially in potential disagreements with the EU.
“For example, we have a different view on how it was anchored in the constitution that in moral and ethical matters, the sovereignty of the Slovak Republic always applies. But can’t some act of the EU adjust this differently for us? So we want to amend this,” he stated.
We’re dealing, as I said, with two genders. It won’t be a helicopter, it won’t be a swan, nor a cat, nor a bear. It will either be a man or a woman.
Fico also stressed the need to align Slovakia’s education system with the constitution. “If the constitution states that marriage is a unique bond between a man and a woman, then nothing else can be taught in schools,” he said.

Fico’s comments came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced a similar policy during his inaugural address on Monday, declaring that the US would officially recognize only two genders. Later that day, Trump signed two executive orders reversing protections for transgender rights and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, established during former President Joe Biden’s term. One of the orders, titled ‘Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government’, states that “there are only two genders, male and female,” and orders agencies to update official documents such as passports and visas accordingly.
Fico praised Trump’s stance as a “pragmatic, rational policy” and suggested that the EU should follow his example.
“This is a return to common sense,” Fico said, referencing both his proposal and Trump’s policy. He has not yet provided a timeline for the proposed amendment but signaled that the initiative will be finalized and submitted to parliament soon.
