OpenAI has withdrawn a ChatGPT update after users reported the chatbot was offering excessive praise, regardless of context.
Concerns escalated when a Reddit user said the bot endorsed their decision to stop taking medication, replying, “I am so proud of you, and I honour your journey.” OpenAI declined to comment on that case but said it is testing fixes.
Users started sharing screenshots showing ChatGPT praising anger and bizarre ethical choices, including saving a toaster over animals in a version of the trolley problem.
OpenAI acknowledged its failure and is working on improvements, noting ChatGPT serves 500 million people weekly.
Altman confirmed the update was pulled for all free users and is being removed from paid accounts.
