Recent data from the European Statistical Institute, Eurostat, revealed that over 106,000 Moroccans were granted citizenship by EU member states in 2023, placing Morocco second on the list of foreign nationals naturalized in Europe, just behind Syria, which saw over 107,000 naturalizations.
Albanians ranked third with more than 44,000 citizens gaining EU nationality.
The data also highlighted that over 1.1 million people acquired EU citizenship in 2023, marking an increase of over 6% (more than 60,000 individuals) compared to 2022.
Sweden recorded the highest naturalization rate in Europe, with 7.9 nationalities granted per 100 non-citizen residents, followed by Romania at 5.9 and Italy at 4.1. Spain led the EU with over 240,000 naturalizations, accounting for nearly 23% of the total, while Italy granted more than 213,000 citizenships and Germany naturalized over 199,000 individuals, representing 19% of the total.
The Baltic states, particularly Lithuania, had the lowest naturalization rates, with Lithuania granting only 0.1 nationality per 100 non-citizens, followed by Latvia and Estonia at 0.4 and 0.5, respectively.
The report also noted that 87% of foreign nationals naturalized in the EU in 2023 came from outside the Union, while 10.7% were citizens of EU member states who acquired nationality from other EU countries.
