Two Palestinian organizations revealed on Monday that Marwan Barghouti, a member of the Central Committee of Fatah, has sustained injuries following an assault at the Israeli Megiddo Prison.
The Palestinian News and Information Agency (Wafa) reported a statement from the Palestinian Authority’s Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Club, which condemned the repeated attacks by Israeli prison authorities against leaders of the prisoners’ movement, labeling them attempts at “assassination.”
According to the statement, on September 9, special units from the Israeli prison administration executed a “new crime” against Barghouti and several of his isolated comrades in Megiddo Prison, resulting in multiple injuries, particularly to his upper body.
The organizations described the violent repression of prisoners since the beginning of the current conflict as indicative of a clear intention by the occupation forces to attempt to “assassinate” them, especially given the ongoing nature of the assaults.
They noted that the Israeli prison administration is isolating dozens of prisoners’ leaders under harsh and dire conditions, subjecting them to repeated brutal attacks within their cells. Legal teams have documented numerous incidents of repression across various prisons, which they classify alongside torture, starvation, and medical neglect that have surged since the onset of the current conflict.
Wafa reported that Barghouti has been imprisoned since 2002 and is serving multiple life sentences totaling 40 years. Since the beginning of the conflict, he has faced several transfers and isolations.
According to the agency, the prison administration has transferred Barghouti between multiple prisons since December. The statement also mentioned a systematic incitement against him, reflecting ongoing extremist governmental rhetoric encouraging violence against prisoners, which has reached unprecedented levels, including the sharing of videos depicting the torture of prisoners in degrading conditions.
