A recent report by Visual Capitalist, a platform that provides data-driven visualizations, revealed that the combined annual emissions of the top 11 global fashion companies are nearly equivalent to Morocco’s total emissions in 2023.

Nike, Inditex, and Adidas were ranked among the largest contributors to carbon emissions worldwide within the fashion industry.

These three companies, along with the other eight in the top 11, according to the report, were responsible for a staggering 73 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions in 2022.

Data revealed that Nike was the top carbon emitter among the 11 listed fashion companies, responsible for 18.2 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent between June 1, 2021, and May 31, 2022.

Inditex, the Spanish multinational and parent company of Zara, Pull&Bear, and Massimo Dutti, closely followed with emissions estimated at 17.6 million metric tons between February 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023.

Adidas ranked third, contributing approximately 7.7 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent between January 31, 2022, and December 31, 2022.

H&M contributed 7.6 million metric tons of CO2 emissions between December 1, 2021, and November 30, 2022, ranking fourth among the companies studied.

Visual Capitalist, quoting the UN Environment Programme, emphasized the fashion industry’s significant contribution to global CO2 emissions, water consumption, and landfill waste.

For context, Morocco has made decarbonization a priority, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 and a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030.
