Morocco is emerging as a key competitor to Spain in the aviation sector, as Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson warns that Spain faces the risk of losing capacity and investment due to its less competitive environment.

Wilson, speaking to the portal Tourinews, highlighted that Morocco’s modern infrastructure and connected airports make it an attractive option for airlines, leaving Spain’s regional airports vulnerable.

Ryanair recently announced an 18% reduction in its capacity in Spain for the summer season, cutting 800,000 seats and canceling 12 routes.

This primarily affects regional airports, which heavily rely on low-cost carriers. Wilson attributed the move to Spain’s “excessive taxes” and ineffective incentive programs from Aena, the country’s airport management monopoly.

He pointed out that, unlike Spain, markets like Morocco, Italy, and Croatia actively promote growth, leading Ryanair to shift its focus and resources to these more competitive regions.
