or the 8th time, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, highlighted, in his annual report to the members of the Security Council on the Sahara issue, the dynamic of socio-economic and structural development in the Moroccan Sahara.

The enshrinement of the socio-economic development model in the Moroccan Sahara recognizes the efforts made by the Kingdom with a view to boost sustainable and responsible development, reconciling the creation of wealth, land use planning, environmental protection and the promotion of local culture.

Mr. Guterres underscored the ongoing socio-economic and infrastructural development dynamic in the Moroccan Sahara, as well as Morocco’s continued investment in its Saharan provinces.

The report notes that the Kingdom has continued to intensify the development of infrastructure, renewable energy projects and trade activities.

In this regard, it referred to the inauguration of the new major bridge, the Grand Bridge over the Oued Sakia Al Hamra, on July 29, 2024, on the sidelines of the commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the accession of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the Throne of His Glorious Ancestors.

The Kingdom’s New Development Model was also highlighted in the report of the UN chief.

This model is “focused on sustainable development and the creation of employment opportunities by exploiting natural resources and promoting local participation”, according to the same source.

Since 2016, the UN Secretary-General has devoted part of his report to Morocco’s investments in the socio-economic and infrastructure development of its Sahara, for the benefit of local populations.
