Spain continues to lead the world in organ donation, with 6,464 transplants in 2024, up 10% on 2023.
According to the National Transplant Organization (ONT), this increase is due to the generosity of the 2,562 people who donated their organs posthumously, a figure up 9%.
For 33 years, Spain has held the world record for deceased organ donors per million inhabitants.
In 2024, the transplant rate rose to 132.8 per million inhabitants, the highest ever recorded, while the donor rate reached 52.6 per million inhabitants, exceeding the Organization’s target of 50.
Lung transplants saw the biggest increase (+30%), with 623 operations. This was followed by kidney transplants (+10%) with 4,047 cases, heart transplants (+7% with 347 procedures) and liver transplants (+6% with 1,344 transplants).
These exceptional results, the ONT boasts, were made possible by the more than 2,500 deceased donors, 65% of whom also donated tissue, mainly corneas, bones and tendons. In addition, 404 people donated a kidney (397) or part of their liver (7) during their lifetime, according to the same source.
