Emergency services have recovered 51 bodies in the Valencia region of eastern Spain, where torrential rains have caused flooding, the regional government announced on Wednesday.

The Valencian government assures that it activated the multiple casualty procedure last night and that this toll remains provisional, reports the local press.

“The provisional figure of people who have died [is] 51”, confirmed the emergency services in a message on the X social network.

Storm Dana, which has been battering the country since Monday, has led to the closure of several ports, cuts in road and rail traffic, and disruptions to public transport, particularly in Valencia and Andalusia.

On Tuesday, the authorities reported that seven people were missing, including one in Alcudia in the Valencia region and six in the town of Letur, in the neighboring province of Albacete (Castilla-La Mancha region), where a flash flood invaded the streets, swept away cars and flooded buildings, according to images broadcast by Spanish television channels.

The emergency services, supported by drones, are working through the night to search for the missing in Letur, the central government’s delegate for Castilla-La Mancha, Milagros Tolón, told public television TVE.

The central government has set up a crisis unit, which met for the first time on Tuesday evening, while the Congress of Deputies suspended its plenary session on Wednesday morning.

Valencia City Council announced that all schools and public gardens would remain closed on Wednesday, and that all sporting events had been cancelled.

Twelve flights due to land at Valencia airport (east) were diverted to other Spanish cities due to heavy rain and strong winds, said Spanish airport operator Aena.

Ten other flights due to depart from or arrive at the airport were cancelled. National rail infrastructure operator Adif said it had suspended high-speed trains between Madrid and Valencia due to the effects of the storm on key points of the rail network.
