With Donald Trump set to move back into the White House in January, few nations have more at stake than Mexico. The US southern neighbour has been a frequent target of Trump’s ire and threats on the 2024 campaign trail, just as it was during his first administration, when Trump famously forced the renegotiation of the NAFTA free trade agreement. This time, Trump has threatened not only mass deportations of undocumented migrants back to Mexico, but also significant tariffs on the country should it fail to halt the flow of deadly opioids across the US border.
