Thousands of Spaniards took to the streets of Madrid on Sunday to protest against the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, demanding early elections in a large rally supported by right-wing parties.

Demonstrators gathered in the Plaza de Castilla in the heart of Madrid’s financial district, waving Spanish flags and chanting for Sánchez’s resignation, calling him a “traitor.”

The protest was organized by over 100 small groups affiliated with right-wing and far-right movements under the banner “For Unity, Dignity, Law, and Freedom. General Elections Now.”

The rally received backing from the People’s Party (PP) and the far-right Vox party.

Protesters condemned a range of government policies and decisions, including the pardoning of Catalan separatist activists, alliances with separatist parties, and corruption investigations involving figures from the Socialist Party and the Prime Minister’s wife, Begonia Gómez.

Authorities estimated that about 25,000 people participated in the protest, while organizers claimed the number was closer to 400,000.

Demonstrators held signs reading “Sánchez Go Home” and “Sánchez is Destroying Spain,” alongside slogans opposing immigration.

Vox leader Santiago Abascal, the only party leader present at the rally, stated, “This government is destroying the Spanish people. They have betrayed and lied to them.”

He added, “Today, Spaniards are poorer than they were when Pedro Sánchez took office, regardless of what the government says. It has become harder for them to meet their needs.”

In recent years, job numbers have increased and salaries have risen in Spain, but inflation and rent costs have also surged.

Sánchez, who has been in office since 2018, leads a fragile minority government that relies on the votes of Catalan and Basque separatist parties in Parliament to pass legislation. The concessions he has made to these parties have fueled anger among right-wing factions.
