A family in Massachusetts, Northeastern United States is suing a school after their son was accused of cheating for using AI to assist with a history paper.
The lawsuit, filed by parents Jennifer and Dale Harris, claims the school unfairly punished their son without clear guidelines on AI usage in the student handbook.
They argue that the handbook only included references to AI this year, after the incident occurred. Jennifer stated, “They told us our son cheated on a paper, which is not what happened,” emphasizing that their son utilized AI as a research tool rather than to write the paper itself.
