A U.S. fighter jet was mistakenly shot down by the USS Gettysburg, an American missile cruiser, over the Red Sea.
Both pilots ejected and were rescued, with one suffering minor injuries.
The U.S. military has launched an investigation into the incident, calling it an “apparent case of friendly fire.”
This incident is the most serious involving U.S. troops in over a year of operations targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen. Prior to the jet being downed, U.S. forces had shot down multiple Houthi drones and an anti-ship missile launched by the rebels.
An investigation is underway to determine how the mistake occurred.
