The dynamics of growing international support for the Moroccanness of the Sahara and the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom to definitively settle this regional dispute were highlighted Tuesday before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The President of the Commune of Smara, Moulay Brahim Charif, noted that this initiative, deemed as serious and credible by the Security Council, offers broad autonomy to the southern provinces and confers important prerogatives on local populations to manage their own affairs within the framework of the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco.

Beyond its ambition to promote sustainable development throughout the region, this wise initiative is a “peaceful and democratic” solution to resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, through representative bodies with effective and pragmatic prerogatives and the necessary human and financial resources, he pointed out.

For her part, Leila Dahi, an MP from the southern provinces, highlighted Morocco’s diplomatic breakthroughs in its efforts to defend its territorial integrity against the ambitions of the armed separatist militias of the “polisario” and their mentor, Algeria.

In this regard, she mentioned the growing support of major world powers for the Moroccanness of the Sahara such as the United States, France, Spain and Germany, as well as the opening by some thirty countries of their consulates in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla.

Ms. Dahi, who is also the Chairwoman of the Youth Caucus within the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), said that 40% of the countries representing the five regions of Africa have decided to open their consular representations in this part of Morocco.

According to her, this is a clear message that the African continent rejects the ghostly entity as well as the useless and desperate maneuvers of the armed separatists in Tindouf and their sponsors.

She stressed that this growing international support is a clear recognition of the legitimate historical rights of the Kingdom over its entire territory.

For his part, the mayor of the city of Dakhla, Erragheb Hormatollah, highlighted the climate of democracy and the dynamics of all-round development underway in the southern provinces, noting that the legitimate representatives of these Moroccan provinces were elected following free and transparent elections.

As the mayor of the city of Dakhla, “who was democratically elected by authentic Sahrawis,” Mr. Hormatollah underlined that the armed separatist movement of polisario “does not represent me nor the voters who elected me,” adding that the real representatives of the Sahrawis are those elected transparently by the real population of the Sahara.

For her part, Nabroha Duihi, from the civil society, indicated that Morocco, aware of the insidious maneuvers of the enemies of its territorial integrity and eager to put an end to this regional dispute, took the initiative by presenting before the international community a realistic political solution where there is neither winner or loser, and this through the autonomy plan.

“While this initiative was welcomed by the entire international community, it has, on the other hand, caused so much dismay among the adversaries of our country who seek instead to impose, by force, deception and blackmail, a bogus entity to get their hands on the territory of the Moroccan Sahara in order to make it a window on the Atlantic,” she noted.
