The White House confirmed Monday that the new tariffs President Donald Trump threatened to impose on Chinese imports will be added to existing ones set to take effect later this week—potentially pushing the total additional tariffs on Chinese goods to 104% this year.
Trump had posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, announcing plans to slap an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports starting April 9.
Shortly afterward, the White House clarified that this new 50% tariff would be added to the already announced 34% tariff set to go into effect on Wednesday, signaling a significant escalation in trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
The administration said the move is intended to protect American industries from what it called “unfair practices” by China.
Analysts warn that the sweeping tariffs could further strain U.S.-China trade relations and raise consumer prices in the U.S. by increasing costs on imported goods.
The announcement comes as Trump ramps up his 2024 presidential campaign, with trade policy and economic nationalism once again playing a central role in his platform.
