A widespread power outage disrupted transportation and caused major inconveniences across Spain, Portugal, and parts of southern France on Monday, affecting millions of people, according to electricity network operators.
Spanish radio stations reported that sections of the Madrid Metro were evacuated as the city’s public transit system was impacted. Spain’s national railway company also announced a suspension of train services amid the outage.
In central Madrid, traffic came to a standstill as traffic signals failed, creating significant congestion. Meanwhile, the company operating Spain’s airports reported disruptions at several facilities.
The cause of the blackout has not yet been determined.
